These tools are everywhere, and they are genuinely good at what they were built for. But used as the foundation of a business website they tend to produce bloated code, slower pages and limited flexibility. We optimise for something else: performance, scalability and long-term maintainability.
Performance is everything
Page builders load their own CSS and JavaScript frameworks across every page, whether a given page uses their features or not. A plain contact page ends up carrying the weight of a system capable of sliders, animations and pop-ups it never calls on. That produces:
- Slower load times, especially on mobile data
- Poor scores in tools like Google PageSpeed Insights
- Weaker rankings, because Core Web Vitals are a real ranking input

Security and scalability
Custom sites are more secure and easier to scale. There is no builder framework and no chain of add-on plugins, each with its own release cycle and its own security history. Fewer moving parts means a smaller attack surface and far less that can break during a routine update.
It also makes future work faster and cheaper. Adding a new section to a custom theme is a contained job. Adding one to a builder site often means fighting the builder first.
The cost nobody mentions: lock-in
This is the argument we find most persuasive, and it is the one least often made.
Page builders store their layouts as their own markup inside your content. Deactivate the builder and you do not get clean HTML back — you get a screen of unreadable shortcodes where your page used to be. That means the annual licence renewal is not really optional, and moving away later is a rebuild rather than a migration.
Add up a licence, the premium add-ons that inevitably follow, and the developer time spent working around the builder’s assumptions, and the “cheap” option stops looking cheap somewhere in year two. A custom theme has no licence, and if you ever leave us the code is yours and any competent WordPress developer can pick it up.
When a page builder is the right answer
To be fair to them, there are cases where we would tell you to use one. If you need a throwaway campaign site live by Friday, if the budget genuinely will not stretch to custom work, or if nobody in your organisation will ever touch code and you want to restructure pages yourself every week, a page builder is a reasonable choice. It is a real tool solving a real problem.
What it is not is a good foundation for a site that has to load fast, rank well and still be maintainable in five years. If that describes your website, the convenience is being paid for by your visitors.
